What are the environmental benefits of powder coating? Powder coating is much more eco-friendly than traditional wet paint with a much smaller environmental impact on your surroundings and you. Here’s why:
1) Powder Is Reusable
When you spray powder, not all of it gets on to the part – but that’s okay. There are plenty of ways to collect the powder that doesn’t stick. This lets you reuse the powder all while reducing waste. Not all of the powder will be salvageable (about 30-40% with a good reclaim system) and you will have to add new powder to your mix to keep the color consistency, but it can save you big – especially if you only use one color over and over. Good for your wallet and good for the environment.
2) Reduced Hazardous Waste
Powder coating operations produce much less hazardous waste than conventional liquid coating lines. When you go to throw away unused or excess powder, it’s inert. The powder that falls to the floor inside the booth is safe to handle and discard. And you won’t have to use chemical paint thinners to fix mistakes pre-curing – just blow the powder off.
3) Negligible VOCs
VOC’s are Volatile Organic Compounds that have been shown to deplete ozone. Wet paint is full of VOCs. Powder has almost none. Because of that, powder is considered non-toxic.
4) No Air Pollution
Because powder coating is safe for the environment, it doesn’t fill the shop with harmful fumes. You don’t have to vent powder coating exhaust outside because the exhaust is clean enough to breathe. Airborne powder is considered a nuisance dust and does not pose any serious threats (but you will want to spray it in a properly filtered powder spray booth – find out more here).
5) Already Complies With Environmental Regulations
While you will need to check with your specific jurisdiction, as long as you have purchased quality equipment that meets code, your powder coating operation will meet all current environmental regulations. Because of reasons 1-4, powder coaters face much less of a burden than wet paint shops to make their operation environmentally safe.
If you are looking to switch your finishing process to something cleaner and safer, powder coating will provide immediate benefits to you and the environment.
